ABOUT THE ARTIST
A lifelong Texan, Ron St. Angelo has had his photographs published in countless books and magazines during his thirty year association with the Dallas Cowboys. While on the Cowboys' sidelines, he has captured historic images that have included NFL record breaking titles and three Super Bowl Championships. Hired by Tex Schramm in 1979, he photographed the legendary Tom Landry for his official Pro Football Hall of Fame photograph. His photographs from Super Bowl XXVIII and Super Bowl XXX were chosen as the official NFL Lithographs for those two World Championship title games. In 2002, he earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination in Photojournalism for his photography of Emmitt Smith breaking the NFL rushing title.
Born in Beaumont, Texas, in 1948, Ron served two tours of combat duty in Vietnam from 1967-1973, fighting in the Tet Offensive in 1968 and the “Rung Sat Special Zone, Mekong Delta, known as the “Forest of Assassins” in 1969. He served as a U.S. Navy Boatswain's Mate aboard the USS Brinkley Bass DD 887, a Gearing Class Man-O-War Destroyer. He was decorated for his combat service and received an Honorable Discharge from The United States Navy in 1973.
In 1974, Ron began his career as a professional photographer at Gittings Portrait Studios located in Neiman Marcus Department Store. He mentored under Arthur Heitzman, Senior Photographer. He began his own Professional Photography Studio in 1976, photographing for “Wild West Productions” and “Rockefellers” in Houston, and Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas photographing musical performers Bruce Springsteen, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Neil Young, Shawn Phillips, Linda Ronstadt, B.B. King, Righteous Brothers, Crosby Stills and Nash, Leon Russell, Willie Nelson, and Van Morrison.
In 1989 he was awarded a Masters of Photography from the Professional Photographers Association.
His work is on permanent exhibition at Dallas Cowboys Headquarters at the Star in Frisco, Texas and the “Hall of Fame Level" at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. In 2009 the Cowboys established the St. Angelo Signature Collection. One of his original works is on permanent exhibit at the White House and has been acknowledged by President George W. Bush, Senator John McCain, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
His career has included many significant accomplishments including traveling to China in 1989 to instruct Chinese professional photographers in American techniques and methods. In 2004 he was chosen as a Nikon Camera's "Legends Behind the Lens" photographer and traveled with Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame Quarterback Troy Aikman to be honored for his lifetime achievement in photography at the Photo Marketing Association and Trade Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. His bestselling book, "Greatest Team Ever" was released in 2007 and features more than 170 photographs along with essays from Norm Hitzges. Today, he serves as an Adjunct Professor of Photography at the prestigious Art Institute of Dallas.
In 2021, Ron’s historic photography was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, The Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and a permanent collection and exhibit in the Dallas Historical Society at the Historic Texas Landmark Classic Art Deco building Great Hall of State at Fair Park in Dallas along with Legendary Hall of Fame Head Coach Tom Landry Collection. He is a graduate student at Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts at the University of Dallas studying Philosophy and Theology. His work is on permanent exhibition throughout the University. He is a lifetime member of the Legacy Society for his contribution to the University of Dallas. In 2024, St. Angelo’s photography was showcased in a feature article in the University of Dallas Official Publication, “Tower Magazine”, that included his most recent work on assignment in Europe for the Roman Catholic Publication The National Catholic Register where he wrote and published articles from “Our Lady of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, Our Lady of Lourdes in Lourdes, France, and the Vatican at Saint Peter’s Basilica, in Rome, Italy. He is a contributing photographer to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas whose photography was used in the announcement of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral. He has published three coffee table books for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas, including “Cathedral Shrine of Virgin of Guadalupe”, “Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church", and in 2021, “Sublime Mystery”.
